What Is "Cut Quality"?
Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond:
- Returns maximum light through the top (brilliance)
- Disperses light into rainbow colors (fire)
- Creates contrast patterns (scintillation)
A poorly cut diamond leaks light out the bottom and sides, looking dull even if it's D color and flawless.
The Three Components of Cut
1. Proportions
Table %: 54-58% (ideal)
Depth %: 59-62.5% (ideal)
Crown Angle: 34-35° (ideal)
Pavilion Angle: 40.6-41° (ideal)
2. Symmetry
How precisely the facets are aligned. "Excellent" symmetry means perfect alignment.
3. Polish
Surface finish quality. "Excellent" polish means no scratches or burn marks from polishing.
