Here's a secret the diamond industry doesn't want you to know:
A poorly cut D VVS1 looks worse than a well-cut H SI1.
What Is "Cut Quality"?
Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond:
- Returns maximum light through the top (brilliance)
- Disperses light into rainbow colors (fire)
- Creates contrast patterns (scintillation)
A poorly cut diamond leaks light out the bottom and sides, looking dull even if it's D color and flawless.
The Three Components of Cut
1. Proportions
Table %: 54-58% (ideal)
Depth %: 59-62.5% (ideal)
Crown Angle: 34-35° (ideal)
Pavilion Angle: 40.6-41° (ideal)
2. Symmetry
How precisely the facets are aligned. "Excellent" symmetry means perfect alignment.
3. Polish
Surface finish quality. "Excellent" polish means no scratches or burn marks from polishing.
Why Chinese HPHT Has Better Cut Consistency
Modern Chinese polishing factories use Sarin/OGI scanning machines that optimize cut before polishing. This means:
- More consistent proportions
- Less human error
- Higher yield of "Excellent" cut stones
We only source stones with Triple Excellent (Cut, Polish, Symmetry). No exceptions.
The "Ideal Cut" Premium
An "Ideal Cut" stone (AGS 0 or GIA Excellent with ideal proportions) commands a 10-15% premium over "Very Good" cut.
It's worth it. The difference in sparkle is immediately visible.
